Not just the computer, the whole package is noticeably smaller and lighter. The first thing I noticed on removing the MBP’s box from its cardboard sleeve was how dinky it was compared to the packaging of its predecessor. Yet who in the real world buys a new computer to replace the one that came out merely months before? Surely more people are going to be interested in how much of an improvement the new machines are over a four or five year old MacBook that’s nearing the twilight portion of its operating window and thus needs to be replaced.Īfter much soul-searching, I’d chosen to replace my late-2007, 13″ white MacBook 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo with the new 13″ Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro, with the snappy 2.9GHz i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and 750GB hard drive. Of the reviews that do exist, most will undoubtedly have focused on how the new hardware compares to the version that came directly before it. So, having had to make the difficult decision this month to put my ailing, late-2007 Santa Rosa MacBook out to pasture for one of the new models, I thought I’d share the experience.

There's a comparison on one of the respected Mac sites and they basically say that with a hot-rodded i7 like that, excluding the retina screen (which is admittedly very nice but very expensive and again, to get one of those new MBP's up to the same spec as that 2012 would be ridiculously expensive.) there's nary a difference between the 2012's and the latest versions.Somewhat overshadowed by the Retina MacBook Pro, the refreshed, original case-design Ivy Bridge range of Apple laptops, released simultaneously with the Retina MBP at June’s WWDC Keynote, doesn’t seem to have received a great deal of attention in the media. Boots in under 20 secs and I never max it out. That's the exact machine I have and it never stumbles. (i.e. What is confusing me is that the i5 is a lot newer, and only modestly weaker in terms of CPU (2.7GHZ vs 2.9GHZ for the i7), so intuitively I think it must be a better machine. Retina is nice, but I use an external monitor for serious production, so it's not a huge factor. 2015 has a 128GB flash drive which I suspect (i.e.

Budget extends to EITHER (a) a 2015 i5 retina MBP, and (b) a 2012 i7.

Life's too short for this pain, so I want to get a gruntier MBP. I use a variety of soft synths, record quite a bit of audio (external synths, guitar) and like to run a lot of plugins.

I am tending to start maxing out on 1 x Aalto plus 2 x Reaktor instances, and a few plug in effects units, depending on the particular ensemble).

I have started using Reaktor and Aalto of late (DAW is Ableton), which I love, but I am frequently maxing out CPU. I am currently using a 1.4GB Single Core i5 Macbook Air for music production (4GB RAM).
